According to SailGP meteorologist Chris Bedford, the Spanish venue could offer a much lighter test, with the fleet potentially racing on the edge of foiling, particularly on Saturday.
“I think Valencia is going to seem pretty calm by comparison to what we’ve seen over the last few events,” Bedford said. “It’s an interesting venue because we can have some very light sea breezes.”
How well can teams adapt when speed is no longer guaranteed? With Geneva waiting immediately after Valencia, the fleet is entering a stretch of the season where adaptability could become every bit as important as outright pace.
The forecast is currently pointing towards a light Saturday, with light to moderate sea breeze on Sunday. While Bedford does not expect a complete absence of wind, there could be periods when the F50s are right on the threshold between displacement sailing and foiling. That could make a very different set of skills decisive.
“We don’t have any major weather systems coming through like we had in Sassnitz, we don’t have the strong, relatively fresh sea breezes that we had in Portsmouth and we don’t have the active weather that we had in both New York and Halifax,” Bedford said. “It’s going to pose a different kind of challenge to the crews than they’ve seen in a while.”
There’s another wildcard lurking close to shore. The Valencia course sits between the beach and a long harbor breakwater, which could create localized and potentially confused sea conditions even if the wider Mediterranean remains relatively benign.
“If there’s any kind of angle of the sea from the northeast, the reflection of the waves off the breakwater can be quite substantial,” Bedford said. “Even with relatively benign conditions, you can have some tricky and confused seas just off the beach.”
The Spain Sail Grand Prix lands in Valencia on September 5-6.
Racing is scheduled to start at Valencia from 12:30 BST on both Saturday and Sunday.
After Valencia the final event in Europe is the Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix Geneva 19-20 September. Followed by Dubai and Abu Dhabi in November 2026.
