Peter McClennen’s USA Gamecock leads the Melges 24 Worlds after a fast, shifty opening day, while Tomas Mathisen NOR Team Bagdad Prospects Helly Hansen sets the pace in the Corinthian fleet.
While three teams shared the race victories, consistency decided the first overnight leader.
Peter McClennen’s Gamecock posted a 3-5-2 scoreline to finish the day on 10 points. They have a one-point lead over Anthony Kotoun’s Wahgwan with 2-3-6, and Geoff Fargo’s Sentinel with 5-2-4, tied on 11 pts.
In fourth is Brian Porter’s Full Throttle tied on 15 pts with Peter Duncan’s Shiitake and in sixth place Race 3 winner Dark Horse on 16 pts.
Race winners were Lindsey Duda Coe’s USA Sin Duda in the first race. Brian Porter’s USA Full Throttle won the second, and Cuyler Morris’ USA Dark Horse won the third race.
Best placed British entry is Stuart Simpson’s Team Barbarians in 18th overall, 3rd Corinthian with 12, 17, 22 finishes. Other British entry Zhik Race Team is 21st overall, 6th Corinthian, with 25, 20, 18 finishes.
Three more races scheduled for Wednesday’s second day of competition in Harbor Springs, Michigan, USA.
