Jonatán Vadnai of Hungary pulled-off a stunning victory at the 2026 ILCA 7 Worlds with the new ‘adjusted scoring’ system.
Vadnai started the medal series in fifth with Adjusted Points (AP) of 42, half of his cumulative score of 84. He scored a fourth in the first medal race and then won the second for a total of 47 pts, to claim the 2026 ILCA 7 World Title.
Second on the podium was Matt Wearn of Australia, who started in ninth with an AP of 45, and added a 1st and 2nd for a total of 48 pts. Third was Britain’s Micky Becket, starting with an AP of 36 and added a 7th and 5th for a total of 48 pts.
Leader after the qualifying/final series was Elliot Hanson of Britain with 62 pts converted to an AP of 31. He finished the medal series with an 8th and 10th for a total of 49 pts, placing 5th behind Lorenzo Chiavarini of Italy, also with 49 pts.
This fairly straightforward adjustment system – scores are halved – produced a tight medal series, at least in this example . . . including a change of leader between the two medal races, and the final leading seven competitors covered by four points.
It goes against traditional sailing championship scoring principles, but for the Olympics with their so called jeopardy media feature requirement, World Sailing could do worse.
